6-5-1: Gregory Maqoma

By 651 ARTS on May 06, 2014

In an effort to help our audience know more about the artists 651 ARTS presents, we have developed the 6-5-1 Interview—six questions, five minutes, one artist. This interview spotlights South African choreographer/dancer Gregory Maqoma.  For more information about Gregory including his full bio, click here.

  1. Where were you born & raised - City/State/Country?
    • Born in the township south of Johannesburg, Soweto, South Africa.

  2. What’s your morning routine?
    • I start by organizing my mind for what is expected for the day. As I get older, stretching in the morning helps me to get my system into gear and prepares my mind for usually a demanding day of rehearsals, meetings and teaching.

  3. What qualities in a person do you admire and despise?
    • Dedication and generosity are qualities I admire. I despise an egoistic character.

  4. If you weren’t a Choreographer/Dancer, what would you be doing?
    • I will be directing something—in the creative world.

  5. What’s your guilty pleasure?
    • Coming out of a performance feeling unsatisfied but receiving a standing ovation.

  6. If you could work on any project or with any artist (dead or alive) who or what would it be and why?
    • Two artists are in my mind presently, Savion Glover and Danny Glover—they are great artists I admire—one is of my generation and the other is a generation before.  I see a story with many possibilities and qualities.

651 ARTS would like to thank Gregory Maqoma for answering our six questions that give a better glimpse of the artists we present. Stay tuned for more artist interviews.
