Hi Friends! The 651 ARTS blog is back and we are thrilled to introduce it with our new website! — just in time to remind all of you that there are only a few tickets left to see Mississippi musician Jimmy “Duck” Holmes play his haunting Bentonia blues in the beautiful residence of Tom Fontana. Jimmy will be joined by artist Ralph Lemon who will speak with him about his life, music and more. The show is next Tuesday, April 27 — call 718–636–4181 x2229.
Jimmy “Duck” and Ralph kick off 651 ARTS’ new series: Live & Outspoken — four weeks of live music, theater, and dance paired with provocative artist-to-artist conversations. Don’t miss Ronald K. Brown and Sonia Sanchez on May 4, Somi and Hugh Masekela on May 11, and April Yvette Thompson and Lynn Nottage on May 18 — all leading performance innovators, all Live & Outspoken.
And there's more! On May 21 and 22, 651 ARTS, in association with Dance Theater Workshop, presents a dance/music collaboration by two Zimbabwean artists who are both thriving in the U.S. within their disciplines — New York-based choreographer Nora Chipaumire and the afropop legend, musician Thomas Mapfumo and his band the Blacks Unlimited in the New York premiere of lions will roar, swans will fly, angels will wrestle heaven, rains will break: gukurahundi.
We hope you will take some time to check out the website and get more information about these fabulous artists. We look forward to seeing you at the theater!
